Paarl was founded in April 1652 by Abraham Gabemma, a Dutchman sent from the Cape Colony to explore the interior. As Gabemma entered the Paarl valley after a downpour of rain, the extruded granite rock, later to become known as Paarl Rock, was glistening like a pearl in the morning sunlight, hence the dutch name for a pearl, parel, which became Paarl.  Paarl is situated in a fertile valley between Paarl Mountain and the Du Toistkloof mountain range.
